Gianetta’s Biography

Gianetta Baril’s life has been devoted to sharing the transformative power of music through her beloved harp “Amadei”, with “virtuosity and delicate nuances gleaming like pearls…”. She has had the honour of playing for members of the British Royal Family, Prime Ministers, and ambassadors in an array of spectacular locales across the world like the Rudolphinum in Prague and on the Selaron Steps in Rio de Janeiro.

Recordings include her solo CD “Luminescence” and as featured soloist in the award-winning CBC recording “Harp Concerti” with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra.

"Her playing, its’ elegance, precision, coloured passion as well as the refined intimacy which it imposes, is a gift for the ears."

A very busy performer, Gianetta collaborates regularly with many musical groups like the Foothills Brass, Bok Brass and Looking Glass Duo as well as with Luminous Voices, and as soloist with the Red Deer Symphony and Edmonton Symphony. With Storymusic, an ensemble founded to perform stories alongside classical masterpieces for very young children, she has most recently been playing for immigrant children in various locales in Calgary thanks to the support of the National Arts Centre.

A Passionate Teacher

A passionate teacher, Gianetta is co-founder and director of the Canadian International Summer Harp Institute and in 2015, she established two harp programmes for social projects in the slums of Rio de Janeiro. These exceptional programmes open the horizon for underprivileged children from the favelas through the gift of music lessons and involvement in an orchestra, providing them with a safe community of peers in which to thrive. In preparation for this volunteer work, Gianetta began an intensive fund-raising initiative “Harping for Harps” which, to date, has facilitated the donation of 10 harps to 4 different projects in Brazil. She is now collaborating with a luthier in Brazil in his efforts to establish a viable harp making business there. Gianetta normally returns twice each year to continue her volunteer commitments, creating opportunities for underprivileged children to discover new horizons through the beauty of music.

In response to the challenges presented by COVID 19, Gianetta was inspired to create the “Harp to Heart” project bringing live harp music to offer restful, comforting programmes for people who feel exhausted and anxious. With the goal to ease mental health stresses due to intense experiences and isolation, Gianetta modified a Ford Transit van to journey with her concert harp in a self-contained rolling, tiny home/performance space. The inaugural fall 2020 journey through Alberta and British Columbia resulted in 33 performances in hospitals, retirement homes, churches and schools.
Her cross-Canada Harp to Heart journey begins in April 2021.
