Juno Award winning harpist Gianetta Baril is delighted to present a special fundraising concert, Harping for Harps, on Tuesday, May 6th at 7:30 PM at St. David’s United Church (3303 Capitol Hill Crescent NW, Calgary). The proceeds from this concert will enable her to purchase harps for children in the Social Action through Music (SAM) project in Brazil.
“I have been invited to go to Brazil in September to teach and also to establish the harp section for the SAM,” says Calgary harpist Gianetta Baril. “The SAM is a project that gives children from the urban slums in Rio the opportunity to learn an instrument and join an orchestra. This program started in the 80’s and some graduates are now playing as professional musicians in orchestras in Brazil and abroad. Many of the students actually walk as far as 20 km to get to their lessons once a week because they cannot afford the bus fare.”
Although the SAM offers scholarships to these children and has acquired many instruments for loan, including 220 violins and 24 cellos, they only have one harp.
“These students have a tough time practicing with only one small harp available. This is why I decided to host a fundraising concert to raise enough money, about $5,000, to buy and ship three small harps. And these harps will be given to the SAM after I finish teaching there in November so students can continue to use the instruments on loan.”
The programme will include audience favourites such as Girl with the Flaxen Hair and First Arabesque by Debussy, Song in the Night by Salzedo, and more.
Tickets are $30 (adults) / $20 (seniors) / $15 (students) / $60 (family) and are available at the door. Tickets can be reserved by calling (403) 284-2276 x106 or by e-mailing email@example.com.
